General Information on the Island of Crete
Crete is located at the south part of Greece. Apart from Gavdos Island, it's the most southern and the biggest Greek island and the southeastern frontier of Europe. Crete has a moderate climate, characterized by hot and dry extended summer periods and rainy winters. Snowfall during the winter months is limited to the mountainous regions whilst on the coastal zone the climate is much warmer. Crete's coastline presents great diversity forming many bays, capes, peninsulas and a variety of beaches. The most popular beaches are the ones at the northern part of the island.
The population is about 600.000 but during summer it gets much more as it's one of
the major tourist destinations. Cretans are very proud, friendly and hospitable people, always optimistic and passionate about life.
According to greek mythology, Crete is the birthplace of Zeus. The most important sightseeing destinations on the island are the numerous historical sites.
