Paros Info

Paros is one of the Cyclades islands of the Aegean Sea. The island is famed for its beaches. The largest is Chrissi Akti (Golden Beach), near Drios on the east coast, facing Naxos. The constant strong wind in the strait between Paros and Naxos makes it a favoured windsurfing location. Other fine sand beaches are to be found (anti-clockwise from Golden Beach) at Pounda, Logaras, Piso Livadi, Naoussa bay, Parikia and Agia Irini.

In Parikia town, the capital of the island, houses are built and decorated in the traditional Cycladic style with flat roofs, whitewash walls and blue-painted doors and window frames and shutters. Shadowed by luxuriant vines, and surrounded by gardens of oranges and pomegranates, the houses give the town a picturesque and pleasing aspect. On a rock beside the sea are the remains of a medieval castle, built almost entirely of the marble remains of an ancient temple. Similar traces of antiquity, in the shape of bas-reliefs, inscriptions, columns, & etc., are numerous.

Parikia town has a small but interesting archaeological museum housing some of the many finds from sites in Paros. The best pieces, however, are in the Athens National Archaeological Museum. The Paros museum contains a fragment of the Parian Chronicle, a remarkable chronology of ancient Greece. Inscribed in marble, its entries give time elapsed between key events from the most distant past (1500 B.C.) down to 264 B.C.

The island is 95 miles far away from Piraeus, the biggest port of Greece, and is connected 6-10 times a day in the summer with conventional and high-speed ferries. Leaving from Piraeus port, Paros is 4h and 15min away when using the conventional ships and only 2h and 30min when using one of the high-speed ships. There are also conventional and high-speed ships that depart from the port of Lavrio (2 trips with high-speed ferries daily in 2h and 15 min) and the port of Rafina (1 trip with conventional ferry in 5h and 1 trip with high-speed ferry in 3h.)

Paros can also be visited by aeroplane as there are three flights that last just 25 min from the airport of Athens, Eleftherios Venizelos.
