General Information on the Island of Tinos

Tinos is the third biggest island of the Cyclades, located between Andros and Mykonos islands. The population is about 10.000 spread in 50 villages.

Tinos is famous amongst Greeks for the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, its 20 or so windmills, about 1000 artistic dovecotes, 50 active villages and its Venetian fortifications at the mountain, Exobourgo. On Tinos, both Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic populations co-exist, and the island is also well known for its famous sculptors and painters, such as Gyzis, Chalepas and Tsokles.

The Panagia Evangelistria church was built in 1823 in the capital of the island, at the exact place where the reputedly miraculous icon of Virgin Mary were discovered. Tinos is also the center of a yearly pilgrimage that takes place on the date of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (August 15th, "Dekapentavgoustos" in Greek). This is perhaps the most notable and still active yearly pilgrimage in the region of the eastern Mediterranean. Many pilgrims make their way the 800 metres from the ferry wharf to the church on their hands and knees as sign of devotion. The day also commemorates the 1940 sinking of the Greek cruiser Elli by an Italian submarine on August 15th, 1940 at Tinos's harbor.

There are about 15 beaches to swim at, as well as archaeological sites, monasteries and churches to visit. The island is also known for its green marble, called Tinos Green.

You can reach the island by ferry boat and speed ferry, departing from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio ports. The travel time depends on the departing port and type of ferry. It takes from a minimum of 2 hours to a maximum of 5 hours to reach the island. There are three ports, one for passenger speed boats, and two for ferries and highspeed boats which carry passengers and cars to other ports, including Mykonos (35 min), Andros and Syros.
